Aaron Faulkner from the University of Iowa!

Greetings all,

My name is Aaron Faulkner. I'm an Iowa native, growing up in Independence. I'm currently an undergrad student at the University of Iowa majoring in Cinema. I'm fairly new to the filmmaking world in a production sense. I've been writing screenplays, however, for almost five years. I own many screenwriting books. So writing is my strength. I've had a couple production courses at the University so far. I've been trained for Final Cut, Cannon's, H-2's for sound, and I'm currently being trained to use Bolex's for my 16mm course. I decided to join on to the group to meet others who are excited to make films just like I am. I'm open for helping anyone with their films. Again, I'm fairly new but I'm a very determined person and I learn quickly. So perhaps one day, I'll be helping you on a project. Look forward to meet you all!

If interested, here are some samples of my writing. These pieces come from various times in my screenwriting experience. So in some places, it will look very amatuerish and in others, it will look decent. If you choose to check them out, great. If not, no harm done!

Hey Aaron, welcome. If you're interested we're actually having a writing group meeting this Sunday at 3PM at the Iowa City Public Library. Feel free to bring 10 pages of a script, and we do a table read and then discuss what we like about it and what we don't, etc.

Really? Crap haha. I don't really have any new material written presently. So I'd just be that awkward fly on the wall if I showed up. Maybe another time. Thanks for the welcome!

So I figured I would add my shorts that I've done so far at the University. As you will note, it's pretty amatuer but I had to start some where. The real purpose I guess of posting this stuff is so I can track my progress as a filmmaker. Ideally, I should be getting better. Ideally....

--------------------

First up is a One-Shot short.

The Scoop: I had to do this project with a classmate. We originally had a much longer version of this sequence. It was very elaborate and we filmed it and were very excited. However, once we started putting things together in the editing room we realized we were over the time limit. So we had to just put something together from what we had. The end result was pretty shitty actually but it we viewed it as just another lesson to learn from.

---------------------

Next up is Vigilante.

The Scoop: I had to do this as a final project. I went into this project with the mindset that I was going to use this short as an exercise. I wanted to do a fight sequence. I wanted to see if I could choreograph, shoot, and edit it. So all my efforts for this project went into the fight sequence. As a result, every other area of the project ended up being shit. The audio, the story, ect. was just poop. But I wasn't concerned with that. All I wanted to do was the fight sequence. The rest is basically filler. Another lesson learned. P.S. Iol I love the audio I put in for the fight sequence. Gosh..what was I thinking haha.

--------------------

Finally (for now)... Influence

The Scoop: This is my best work so far. When I started screenwriting back in high school, I started on feature lengths. Go big or go home. You know? So it wasn't until right before I came to the University that I had started to write shorts. By that I mean, like 30 minute shorts. I had a hard time trying to condense things. But I eventually got the nack of it. I think this project is a demonstration of that. I focused solely on story with this final project. Yep, I treated it as an exercise. I wanted to see if I could tell a story in a short amount of time. Nothing to fancy. Short and sweet. I think this turned out pretty good. It was actually hard for me to write. In a sense that it was touchy subject material. Writing shorts is easier for me now but the subject of the short kind've made me sick to the stomach. It's actually a little hard for me to watch sometimes as well. My girlfriend, the actress for this, cried when she saw the final product. So yeah, another excercise accomplished and another lesson learned.

The End...???

Aaron-

Welcome! Glad that you got to make it to last month's meeting. Sorry we didn't really get to chat one on one, but hopefully next time.

Take care. :D
